Friday 17 November 2017

Monday 13th - Friday 17th November - a few notes

Since my last diatribe, I’ve been to six games, watched a lot of decent football, seen 21 goals, and done a couple of hours work! I also witnessed a 45 yard goal, and a case of larceny that was a bit surreal to say the least!

The 45 yarder came in Monday’s game at Hucknall Rolls, where Notts County Pathway U19 were hosting Dunkirk U19 in a North Midlands Development Football League fixture.  Notts actually went ahead in this game with a mis-hit shot in the 6th minute. That was as good as it got for the young Pies though. Dunkirk levelled with a header with 12 minutes of the second half played and went deservedly ahead on 84. In added time the home keeper was caught way out of his area, and when the Dunkirk no. 9 won the ball, he remained calm, looked up and fired it goalwards. The County keeper raced back to try and intercept, but the ball was hit with perfect weight and ended up nestling in the back of the net. F-T 1-3

Tuesday’s afternoon game saw me at Rainworth MW, to see Mansfield Tn Res take on Notts County Res in a Central League Cup tie. A couple of Alfie Potter strikes settled this game in favour of the Stags – who progress through to the next round of the competition.

Tuesday evening – Notts F.A. Senior cup game at Plains Road, where hosts Gedling MW entertained fellow EMCL team Selston FC.  This was a proper cup tie, with neither side giving any quarter. It ended 3-3 after 90 mins, and on a cold night, extra-time was definitely not welcome.  Jay Knight headed the home team into the next round, the goal scored with just a couple of minutes of extra-time remaining.

Wednesday saw me visit Kingsway Park in Kirkby for the first time. The fixture was a Notts Senior League Div 1 game, Ashland Rovers v Awsworth Villa Reserves. This turned out to be a gem of a game, and Mart Roberts did a very good job of recording the action on his blog, “we all stand together”. What he didn’t mention though was the ball theft, and although no-one in their right mind applauds thieving of any kind, the timing of this caper was spot on. The ball was kicked over the wooden perimeter fence, and came to rest at the side of the curbed entrance to the car park.  Before it could be retrieved, a white car pulled up, the passenger door opened, the passenger door closed, the car sped off down the street – and the ball was nowhere to be seen. Not exactly the usual non-league etiquette of booting back errant footballs!!  Finished two apiece – and that was just about the right result.

Thursday I was at Clipstone to catch another North Midlands Development Football League U19 game, this time Mansfield Town taking on the FBT International Academy.  The Stags won 2-0, goals coming in the 11th and 73rd minutes – sorry there are no more details – it was a bit parky and no notes were taken.  AFC Mansfield supremo Andy Saunders handed over a Think Children charity donation, with the rider that I take in their home game v Garforth Town on Tuesday. No problem!

Friday's game was a  North Midlands Development Football League U21 fixture at Eastwood CFC - the Red Badgers entertaining Clipstone FC.  Clipstone went ahead through an OG on 19 - a shot that looked to be flying past the far post deflecting in off an Eastwood defender. Clipstone defended solidly throughout the rest of the game, but Eastwood's terrific second half pressure paid off in time added on at the end of the game.  A corner played into the Clipstone six yard box created all sorts of mayhem and the ball was eventually prodded home to give Eastwood a point their overall play merited.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday games - a few words

Friday 10th November saw me back at the Hollinwood Lane home of Calverton MW to see Gedling Southbank entertain Bingham Town in a Notts Senior League Premier Division fixture.

Bingham are lying mid-table, whilst their hosts have found the jump from division one to the top division a bit of a struggle. The home team have some very good young players on their books, and one or two old experienced heads - that combination should be enough to help them stay in the top division. However, with the proposed restructuring of the leagues, the need to finish as high in the league as possible is paramount, and winning as many home games as possible a priority.

This Friday night game drew in an attendance of 41, every penny counts at this level and if Friday night is the way forward, let’s hope more teams take it up. We had to wait until the 25th minute for the first goal, Tom Jeffries running into the box and firing across the goal into the far corner. The Gedling second goal on 35 has been attributed to Raheem Suban, and his cross that was diverted into his own net by a defender, so fair enough. Bingham were awarded a penalty two minutes before the break, and Tom Spencer made no mistake from the spot. H-T 2-1

The two goal lead was restored when Jeffries finished off a good home team move, tucking the ball home from a tight angle just after the hour mark. Jeffries turned provider for the Gedling fourth on 71, his pass fired across the goal-line to give veteran Nick Edgar the simplest of tap-ins. Spencer netted again for Bingham in added time, but it was too little to late for the visitors, and Southbank deservedly came away from the game with all three points. F-T 4-2 Click here for GSB report

Saturday afternoon’s game was at Greenwich Avenue, home of Northern Premier Div 1 South leaders Basford Utd. They were hosting Spalding Utd in a re-arranged league fixture. For report and videos please click here.  I'm not bothering with a report - details are widely available on the world wide web.

I made the very short trip to Titchfield Park in Hucknall on Sunday morning to catch a local derby cup match between AFC Dowhan and Hucknall Town Sunday. Advertised as a 10:30am kick off, it was soon apparent that wasn’t going to happen, so I headed off to the Remembrance Sunday parade and service that was taking place at the park Cenotaph. Two mins silence duly observed, the game kicked off just after 11:00am, but the wait was well worth it! Ashley Foster put Dowhan ahead in the fourth minute, then on 17, Damian Mann hit a 20 yard curler in the far corner to double the home teams lead.

Alex Stolarski was on hand to prod home for Hucknall Town in the 26th minute after a shot had rebounded off the post straight into his path. Mark Poyser’s 28th minute free-kick from the edge of the box beat the Dowhan keeper to level things up, then Stolarski had another tap in on the half hour mark to give the visitors the lead. H-T 2-3

Mann levelled the scores on the hour, his long range effort giving the Town keeper little chance. Tom Hubbard restored the visitors’ lead on 75, then five minutes later Poyser smashed home from 25 yards to increase that lead. Mann completed his hat-tick with five to play – this time an unstoppable 25 yarder that the keeper never saw. Hubbard fired into the top corner for Town on 87, effectively ending the tie. Very entertaining game in very chilly conditions – but 10 decent goals and for nowt, who can complain! F-T 4-6

Sunday’s 2pm fixture was Mansfield Town Ladies at home to Arnold Town Ladies at Rainworth MW. The afternoon was bitterly cold and a strong, gusting wind made for very difficult playing conditions.

The Stags ladies had a chance to take the lead just a few minutes before the break, when they were awarded a penalty. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, as the ball was smashed against the cross bar. H-T 0-0

So, after a half where both teams struggled with the wind and cold, Arnold netted just a few seconds into the second period, Jodie Ellis firing home from close range. Ellis doubled her tally on 57, but the Mansfield ladies slowly began to get back into the game, and their efforts were rewarded when Chloe Elphick reduce their arrears on 72, then Androulle Kokkinou restored parity four minutes later. The girls were all looking a bit jaded by now, and it was the introduction of Arnold fresh legs that made the difference. Chrystal Smiley hadn’t been on the park long, but her terrific 25 yard shot beat the Stags’ keeper all ends up, and ultimately secured the points for the visitors. F-T 2-3. The game was played in good spirit, and all the players have to be commended for their efforts in such demanding conditions.

Sunday 5th - Weds 8th November - a few words

Sunday morning saw me at Titchfield Park in Hucknall to see AFC Dowhan entertain Edwalton FC in a Notts Sunday League Div 1 fixture. You never know what to expect when watching Sunday morning football, but this turned out to be a real treat. Nick Davies put the home team ahead on 13 with a cracking 25 yarder. Chay Betteridge added Dowhan’s second on 28, but the visitors responded well to going two down, and were deservedly level at half time. Damian Mann hit a curling shot into the top corner on 73 to give the home team a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately the Dowhan defence couldn’t withstand Edwalton’s pressure and it looked as if they had grabbed a share of the points when they restored parity with a minute of regular time left on the clock. Not to be though, as Rory Smith and Betteridge netted in injury time to give the home team a victory they barely deserved. F-T 5-3

Sunday AM at Titchfield Park
Sunday afternoon I was at the Fieldings to take in an East Midlands Regional Football League game between Mansfield Hosiery Mills Ladies and Eastwood CFC Ladies. The game finished level, but in all honesty, there was little of note to write about after the goals were scored. The hosts were ahead with just four minutes played when a free-kick into the Eastwood area was met with a neat flicked header from Kathie Rees that gave the Eastwood keeper no chance. Eastwood were level on 13 thanks to a spectacular 25 yard drive from Sam Burrows that the home keeper could only watch and admire as it flew past her and into the top corner! The only other incident of note was the dismissal of Mansfield’s Claire Stringer on 70 – with the sun just above the horizon and shining directly into my eyes, I have to admit I missed the offence so can’t really comment. F-T 1-1.

The Town Ground home of Heanor Town was the venue on Tuesday7th November, and in all honesty this was one of those games that was less than inspiring. The fixture was a Derbys F.A. Senior Cup game with the home team hosting Borrowash Victoria. To be blunt, this was a game that will not live in the memory for too long. Star man for the Vics was 17 year old keeper Louis Kinnerley – beaten for the only time in the 90th minute by an Elliott Reeve penalty that settled the tie. Heanor skipper Nick Hall’s face after getting the ball in the chock in the knackers was a treat to see, and a bus stuck on Mundy Street causing the irate bus driver to honk his hooter to try and attract the owners of cars poorly parked was another highlight. Nuff said. F-T 1-0.

I witnessed a more remarkable game at Hucknall Rolls Leisure on Wednesday. Arriving in plenty of time for the 11.00 am advertised ko, I noticed on twitter that ko had been put back to 11:30am. I went into the clubhouse and asked the PSUSA team when the ko was going to actually take place, and was told 11:45am. I nipped back home for a coffee and arrived back at the venue at 11:40am to find the players were still warming up.

Kick off was actually a few minutes before noon, but the wait was well worth it. Within 30 seconds of the whistle, KIERAN KNIGHT had slammed the ball past the home keeper to give his team the dream start. Six minutes later, the visitors had a let off when the Referee took no action after their keeper raced out of goal and scythed down an Alfreton striker as he was racing towards goal. I have seen keepers sent off for this type of challenge in the past, but on this occasion the ref simply awarded a free-kick, which came to nothing. KNIGHT added his second on 39, running into the box from the left and firing the ball across the keeper and in at the far post. H-T 0-2

KNIGHT recreated his second goal to complete his hat-trick on the hour mark, then BRADLEY PALMER fired home the PSUSA Academy’s fourth a couple of minutes later, running in from the right and firing into the far corner. The fifth goal on 70 mins was something special – and the only pity was there were only three spectators to witness it. The ball was controlled well by STEVEN BEEJER some 30 yards from goal, and the full-back to careful aim before sending a pin-point accurate drive straight into the top corner!

Alfreton spoiled the away teams clean sheet in the 78th minute when a 20 yard shot gave the visiting keeper no chance. BEEJER restored the five goal lead three minutes later, this time firing a 22 yard free-kick in at the near post – the keeper got his hands to the effort, but was unable to keep it out. KNIGHT had the last word on 85, hitting a sweet low volley from the edge of the box that flew past the home keeper before he was able to react. F-T 1-7. Next week’s game between PSUSA Academy and league leaders Draper Norton Academy should be a cracker. It’s a pity that the 2pm ko rules me out of taking in this game.

Demolition in the background, and on the pitch!
Visited Coronation Park, Eastwood on Wednesday evening, the home team entertaining Awsworth Villa in a Notts F.A. Senior Cup tie. Highlights were the three goals which you can see on You Tube by clicking here. After the Awsworth goal, and Eastwood defender Greg Conn’s dismissal, the spectre of extra-time loomed over the ground. It was a bitterly cold evening and extra-time, although no doubt welcomed by the Villa faithful, would have been a bit of a trial, and I’m not sure if I could have stayed on to watch. Surely the Notts F.A. can take a leaf out of other competitions books (e.g. Northern Premier, Derbys F.A.) and go straight to penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes. F-T 2-1
